This is effectively my first foray into the franchise at all, and I haven't been spoiled by any future improvements, so while I am aware Gen 1 has plenty of growing pains, I don't know any better. This time though, instead of meeting the series in the middle, I decided to go all the way back to where it all began. Skip to 2022, my closest friend is a Pokemaniac able to recite all the Pokemon knowledge you could need at the drop of a hat, and I can't help but feel at least a little curious to give it another try. For a while, I just decided the series wasn't for me, and that my general dislike for RPGs meant it was never meant to be. Having never had a Game Boy, or even a handheld Nintendo system at all until I was 10, I simply never had interest in or access to the series, and I continued to brush it aside for the next 17 years. I was a little too young to really witness the height of Pokemania in the late 90s, but even still it was everywhere when I was a kid. Eight catch Pokemania? Somehow, I completely missed the Pokemon hype train in grade school. The game is not without some rough edges, many of which are refined in the many sequels that have followed (esp. Furthermore, the game was perfect for the handheld GameBoy which allowed for grinding anytime, anywhere and allowed easier interaction with other players in the days before non-PC online multi-player. It could be argued that another version (Blue Version) is a gimmick however, the version exclusives and trade-evolutions made interacting with other players essential to the experience. The multi-player functionality features both competitive (battling) and cooperative (PokéDex) modes. Combined with the challenging goal of completing the PokéDex, the game had incredible depth for its time. At its core is engaging, (mostly) well-balanced role-playing game with a consistent learning curve to progressively intricate obstacles to overcome. Pokémon Red - the game that started what would go on to be the international titan of multimedia success that it is today.
